In Volume 4, Number 1, First Quarter, 1996 of the Newsletter of the Molecular Manufacturing Shortcut Group, there are a series of articles written by Jerome Rosen.  In it, he postulates using nanoassemblers, rather than nanotubes, to construct an Orbital Tower.  It’s very interesting reading.
